BCCI President Sourav Ganguly is pursuing Supreme Court clearance to soften the rules regarding term limits for board officials and has appointed Secretary Jay Shah to attend the ICC Chief Executives’ Committee meeting.
These moves, finalized at the BCCI's 88th AGM in Mumbai, are designed to facilitate a longer tenure for Ganguly and formalize Jay Shah's role as the delegate for the ICC proceedings.
A senior source informed PTI that the proposed amendments have been approved and are heading to the Supreme Court for endorsement. Currently, the constitution mandates a three-year break for any official after serving two to three terms at the state or national level. This means Ganguly, who assumed office on October 23, would typically be required to leave his post this year; however, if the rules are relaxed, he could potentially stay on until 2024.
According to the current constitution, an office-bearer who has served 2 to 3 years terms, either at the BCCI or at the state association goes into an obligatory 3 year cooling off period. BCCI president have took charge on October 23, was to vacate office within this year from now however a dilution could see him continue till 2024.
The board currently wants the mandatory cooling-off period to apply only after an individual completes six years (two terms) separately at the state and national levels. If this is approved, it would also allow Jay Shah to extend his stay, as he has less than a year left in his current term. Meanwhile, Zishan Shah has been named the representative for future ICC CEO board of trustees meetings. Previously, while the CoA (Committee of Administrators) was managing the BCCI, CEO Rahul Johri handled these duties.
Zishan Shah was named India’s representative to go to future meetings of the International Cricket Council’s CEOs board of trustees. The Board of Control for Cricket in India CEO Rahul Johri was the Board’s represent the meeting when its management was being handled by the Supreme Court-appointment Committee of Administrators (CoA).
Now that the Board is functioning independently, the responsibility for these meetings has reverted to the Secretary. High-level officials stated that Jay Shah will attend whenever the meetings are convened. However, the BCCI has yet to name a representative for the general ICC Board meeting or finalize the appointment of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), with officials noting that this will happen after the Supreme Court hearing on December 3. This follows the resignation of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and Sourav Ganguly from the CAC due to conflict-of-interest rules, leading to the appointment of the men's head coach by Rangaswamy, Gaikwad, and Kapil Dev.
After Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly stepped down from the CAC attributable to the Conflict of Interest clause in the new constitution, Rangaswamy, Gaikwad and Kapil Dev selected the men’s team head coach.
