He decided to go through with it now to ensure he would be fully fit and available for the upcoming World T20 International in Australia.
Following a successful back surgery, Pandya is now navigating the rehabilitation process. He is prioritizing his mental health and remains optimistic about a quick return to the pitch, noting that cricket is simply in his blood.
Speaking with IANS, Hardik shared the reasoning behind his decision to undergo surgery, the challenges of the recovery process, and his excitement for the World T20I. He also emphasized the struggle of remaining patient during a time when his instinct is to be out there playing every day.
I struggled with my back for a while and tried everything in my power to avoid going under the knife. But after exhausting all options, it became clear that the conservative approach wasn't working. I realized I couldn't give 100% on the field, and that wasn't fair to the team or to my own career. That's when I knew surgery was the only way forward.
Hardik remarked, “To be honest, I’m feeling great right now. We're following a very structured plan. Recovery after surgery is never a walk in the park, so we're being thorough in every aspect of my rehab. At the end of the day, you can't control injuries. After playing for several years, I've learned that even with the best precautions, injuries are just part of the game. You can't predict them; you just have to deal with them as they happen. My focus now is simply to come back stronger than before.”
He added, “My ultimate goal is to win the World T20. I've come so close before—like during the 2017 Champions Trophy and the 2019 World Cup. I believe our style of play will work well in Australia, and I really want to help the team bring home the trophy.”
