Thanks to exceptional innings from both Lanning and Jemimah, the Delhi Capitals cruised to a 29-run win against the Mumbai Indians.

In a standout performance, the Delhi Capitals overwhelmed the Mumbai Indians during the first encounter of the 2024 Women’s Premier League's Delhi stage. MI struggled to keep pace with a target of 193, falling victim to a lethal DC bowling unit. Left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen was the standout with three wickets, while Marizanne Kapp added two more to keep MI to 163/8. DC's strong position was built on the back of solid half-centuries from Jemimah Rodrigues and Meg Lanning, which pushed the total to 192/4.
Delhi Capitals (DC) players produced an impressive performance to outclass Mumbai Indians (MI) in the first match of the Delhi leg of Women’s Premier League 2024. Chasing a massive 193, MI batters failed to withstand DC’s power-packed bowling attack. DC’s left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen claimed three, while Marizanne Kapp picked two wickets as MI was restricted to 163/8 in 20 overs. Earlier, Jemimah Rodrigues and Meg Lanning scored fine half-centuries, helping DC to reach a big 192/4 in 20 overs.

After winning the toss and deciding to field, MI found themselves on the back foot early. Lanning and Shafali Verma set a blistering pace, racking up 48 runs within the first four overs. Shafali’s energetic 28 off 12 ended when Yastika Bhatia took a sharp catch. Alice Capsey also had a short-lived stay, departing for 19 after being cleaned up by Hayley Matthews.

While Lanning provided the stability with a measured 53, Jemimah Rodrigues provided the fireworks. She dominated the death overs, hitting the ball all over the field to ensure DC finished with a massive score. Jemimah remained not out on 69, punctuated by three sixes and eight fours.

The Mumbai Indians' chase started poorly, losing three key wickets in rapid succession. Marizanne Kapp struck early, removing Bhatia for 6 in the first over, followed by Shikha Pandey bowling out Nat Sciver-Brunt for 5. The momentum swung further toward DC when Kapp dismissed the dangerous Harmanpreet. Although Matthews and Amelia Kerr managed a 25-run partnership to stabilize the innings, Jonassen eventually dismissed Matthews for 29. Despite spirited efforts from Amanjot Kaur (42) and Sajeevan Sajana (24) toward the end, the deficit was simply too large to overcome.
