There is still a lot of mystery surrounding Mahendra Singh Dhoni's future in the IPL. While rumors about his retirement from the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) surface every year, the team has officially entered a new chapter now that Ruturaj Gaikwad has taken over the captaincy from the veteran.
Indian legendary cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) remains uncertain. Over the last few years, questions over Dhoni’s future with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have frequently popped up towards the end of the season; this year, CSK began to enter a new era when Dhoni handed over the captaincy to opener Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Despite Dhoni's silence regarding his next steps with the team, CSK is reportedly lobbying for a rule change that would let them keep the legendary wicket-keeper as an uncapped player.
Reports indicate that during a BCCI strategy meeting for the 2025 season, CSK owners pushed for the reinstatement of a regulation used between 2008 and 2021. This specific rule permitted international cricketers to be classified as uncapped if they had been retired from international play for at least five years.
Leading up to the 2022 mega auction, the retention cap was set at four players, with only two allowed to be uncapped. In a recent session with the BCCI, multiple teams requested an expansion of these retention slots. If Dhoni is successfully classified as uncapped, it would free up a spot for CSK to hold onto another Indian player, potentially boosting their squad depth. It is worth noting that Dhoni officially stepped away from international cricket in August 2020.
This proposal hasn't been welcomed by everyone; other IPL teams are strongly against it. Specifically, Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran criticized the idea, arguing that treating such a player as uncapped would be a sign of 'disrespect' and would unfairly suppress the player's actual market value, which would likely soar in an open auction.
The general consensus among most franchises is that a retired international star should not be labeled as uncapped. The IPL governing council is now weighing these arguments and is expected to finalize the retention guidelines by late August. Additionally, they will decide if the upcoming season will lead into a mega auction—an idea that several team owners are currently opposing.
Parth Jindal, the owner of the Delhi Capitals, noted that the meeting didn't result in any immediate concrete decisions, as most owners remained firm in their positions. Speaking to the press, Jindal explained that the gathering was primarily for the BCCI to gather various perspectives, and they are now waiting for the official rules for the next cycle to be released by the end of August.
