Rohit Sharma, captaining the Indian side, mentioned that he's facing a tough choice between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the upcoming ODI series in Sri Lanka. Rahul has been a reliable pillar of the ODI setup for years. In contrast, Pant hasn't featured in an ODI since November 2022, following a severe accident that kept him away from the game for more than 14 months. However, Pant recently made a powerful return to the international stage with key contributions during the 2024 T20 World Cup.
India’s captain Rohit Sharma has stated that he does not mind having a headache choosing between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the playing XI in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Rahul has been a mainstay in the ODI team for several years, however, Pant has not played an ODI since November 2022, due to a horrible accident that kept him out of competitive cricket for more than 14 months. Pant also had a stunning return to international cricket with a handful of crucial performances in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
During the pre-match press briefing, Rohit stated that he needs to coordinate with the head coach before finalizing the lineup, which will be clear by game day tomorrow. He acknowledged that it's a hard decision because both athletes are elite players capable of winning matches on their own. The Indian opener remarked that having such a difficult choice is actually a positive sign for the team's strength.
Rohit explained that when there's this much deliberation over the starting XI, it indicates a high level of talent within the squad, which he views as a great advantage. He mentioned that he's happy to deal with these kinds of selection struggles throughout his captaincy. He stressed that the team isn't treating this tour as a mere practice session; they are here to play serious cricket and secure a meaningful result from the series.
Before the start of the first ODI, Rohit clarified that the team isn't just using this series as a rehearsal for future tournaments, but is fully intent on winning. The first match of the three-game series between India and Sri Lanka kicks off today, August 2, at the R Premadasa Stadium.
