Following a win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, MS Dhoni made a strong return to the captaincy. During the post-match talk, he pointed out that the stress associated with leading the squad had significantly drained Ravindra Jadeja, noting that the all-rounder felt the heavy burden of his responsibilities.
Due to a series of poor results, Jadeja returned the captaincy to MS Dhoni on Saturday. During his short tenure, the all-rounder guided the defending champions to just two victories across eight matches, while his own struggling form with both bat and ball put the team's prospects at risk.
MS Dhoni suggested that the mental load of captaincy interfered with Jadeja's training and overall output. The experienced wicket-keeper believes that a captain cannot afford to let their individual performance slide. Dhoni admitted that the transition of leadership to Jadeja was planned for this season, and while he offered support, he deliberately stepped back to let Jadeja make his own calls.
Dhoni elaborated that the demanding nature of the captaincy, which intensified game by game, played with Jadeja's headspace. He emphasized that he encouraged the all-rounder to make independent decisions and own the outcomes, arguing that 'spoon-feeding' a leader is counterproductive. According to Dhoni, a captain must be capable of making tough calls under pressure while simultaneously maintaining their own high standards of play.
By removing the leadership burden from Jadeja, Dhoni hopes the all-rounder can rediscover his peak form. This is particularly crucial given CSK's recent lapses in the field, where the team has been uncharacteristically sloppy, dropping nearly 20 easy catches. Dhoni acknowledged this as a major concern but expressed confidence that the squad will bounce back stronger.
Dhoni praised his bowling unit, especially the spinners, for their ability to stifle the Sunrisers' hitters during their chase of 203. He highlighted the importance of bowlers being brave enough to experiment with their approach.
He noted that in high-scoring matches, it's okay to get hit for a few boundaries if it means delivering a couple of crucial, wicket-taking balls that secure the win. CSK's next challenge will be against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 4 at the MCA Stadium in Pune.
