Liverpool weather a storm against Villarreal to scrape through to the Champions League final

After a difficult first half, Liverpool showed great resilience to beat Villarreal 3-2 on Tuesday night at El Madrigal. With a total aggregate score of 5-2, they have officially qualified for the Champions League final. Even though they held a two-goal lead from the first leg, they found themselves in trouble early on, trailing 2-0 by the end of the first 45 minutes.

Villarreal took control from the whistle, with Boulaye Dia finding the net in the 3rd minute. The Senegalese striker was quick to react to Etienne Capoue’s delivery, giving the home side an early advantage.

The first half was a nightmare for the Reds, who looked completely lost and couldn't even get a shot on target. The situation worsened right before halftime when Francis Coquelin scored a brilliant header, tying the series on aggregate. For the entire first half, Villarreal were simply the better team in every department.

Looking to change the momentum, Liverpool introduced Luis Diaz in place of Diogo Jota at the start of the second half. The move was designed to revitalize their attack, and it paid off in the 62nd minute when Fabinho fired a powerful strike that fooled goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, sliding between his legs for the first goal.

The impact of the substitution was felt shortly after; in the 67th minute, Diaz headed in a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold, once again beating Rulli to make it 2-2. This goal put Liverpool ahead 4-2 on aggregate, a lead they would protect until the end. The final blow came courtesy of another Rulli mistake; the keeper wandered too far from his goal, allowing Sadio Mane to intercept the ball and slot it into an empty net to seal the win.

The 2018-19 champions are now heading to Paris, where they will face either Real Madrid or Manchester City. Under Jurgen Klopp, this current squad has been an offensive powerhouse in the 2021-22 campaign, netting a club-record 139 goals across 57 matches.

This win keeps the dream of a quadruple alive, as Liverpool have already lifted the Carabao Cup and remain in the hunt for the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League. They've made history as the first English team to reach the finals of the UCL, FA Cup, and League Cup all in one season.
