The primary goal for BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is to hold the 2020 IPL season in India. The country's most popular sports league was shelved indefinitely in March as a precaution against the coronavirus pandemic.
Driven by a desire to keep the sport alive for global fans, the former Indian captain is keen to ensure 2020 doesn't pass without an IPL season. In a conversation with India Today, he stressed that returning the game to normalcy is a priority. He explained that the BCCI is currently holding off on a final decision regarding the IPL until the ICC announces the fate of the T20 World Cup. Ganguly mentioned that they are willing to squeeze the tournament into a 35-to-40-day slot just to ensure the league happens in India this year.
The BCCI is carefully structuring its strategy to account for the higher costs associated with organizing the event under current conditions. According to the president, the first step is determining if the available time frame permits a tournament in India. If that turns out to be unrealistic, the board will explore international alternatives. Currently, nations such as New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and the UAE have stepped forward as potential hosts should India be unavailable.
