The ICC officially announced on Tuesday that Greg Barclay from New Zealand has been named the new independent chairman. He succeeded Shashank Manohar after winning a contest against Imran Khwaja. The appointment required a two-thirds majority from the 16-person board, and Barclay clinched the victory after receiving the 11th necessary vote from Cricket South Africa. Imran Khwaja had been filling the role on an interim basis since Manohar stepped down in July.
Following the announcement, Barclay released a statement saying he felt honored to be elected and thanked the board of directors for their confidence in him.
He expressed his hope that the cricket community would unite to navigate the challenges of the global pandemic and build a stronger, more resilient foundation for the sport's growth.
Barclay has previously indicated that protecting bilateral international series is a priority for him. Because of this, many insiders believe he may scrap the idea of adding another global ICC tournament, which was a project heavily supported by his predecessor, Khwaja.
Wrapping up his remarks, Greg Barclay mentioned his excitement about collaborating with ICC members to bolster the sport in its primary markets and expand its global reach, making the game more accessible to fans everywhere.
