Sergio Perez has achieved the dream of winning an F1 Grand Prix, even as questions linger about his long-term seat in the series. He capitalized on a chaotic set of errors from Mercedes to claim his first win. Joining him on the podium in Bahrain were Esteban Ocon, who finished second for Renault, and Lance Stroll, who took third for Racing Point.
Early on, George Russell seemed poised for a historic first win in his first outing for Mercedes, especially after his impressive showing in qualifying. Starting second, he quickly overtook Valtteri Bottas and held the lead for the bulk of the race. Everything changed on lap 62; during a Safety Car pit stop, the Mercedes crew made a critical mistake by fitting the incorrect tires. Although they tried to fix it with another stop, a puncture ruined his race, leaving him to finish in 9th. Bottas fared little better, as his aging hard tires left him without the grip needed to challenge for the win, resulting in an 8th-place finish.
Perez's race started in the worst way possible; a collision at Turn 4 on the very first lap sent him to the back of the pack for an early pit stop. However, the Mexican driver put on a masterclass in recovery, utilizing sheer pace and a timely mistake by Mercedes to climb to the front. This victory marks the first win for both Perez and the Racing Point team, a sweet redemption after an engine failure cost him a podium finish just a week prior.
The early chaos at Turn 4 proved fatal for the hopes of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, both of whom were knocked out of the race in the lap 1 accident.
It was a milestone day for Esteban Ocon, who earned his first F1 podium with Renault, effectively silencing the critics who had doubted his capabilities. Meanwhile, Lance Stroll fought off a late charge from Carlos Sainz on the final lap to secure his second podium of the season.
Rounding out the top results, Renault's Daniel Ricciardo took 5th, followed by Red Bull's Alex Albon in 6th, with Daniil Kvyat in the AlphaTauri finishing just behind them.
