One of the most impressive things about MS Dhoni's tenure as captain has been his talent for optimizing his available resources. With a cricketing IQ that is among the highest ever seen, his ability to strategize and improvise is nearly unmatched. He has a sharp sense of when to deploy a player's specific strengths, which is exactly how he transformed the 38-year-old Harbhajan Singh into Chennai's primary strike bowler during the powerplay in this year's Indian T20 League.Indian T20 League this year.

With 13 wickets across 8 games this season, Harbhajan is enjoying his most successful run since 2016. It's also the first time in three years that he has reached double-digit wickets. He has been a revelation for Chennai in the opening overs, consistently breaking partnerships while keeping the scoring rate tightly under control.

He currently shares the spot for the second-most wickets taken during the powerplay this season, trailing only his teammate Deepak Chahar, who has 12. Among bowlers who have delivered at least 100 balls in this phase, his strike rate of one wicket every 16.29 deliveries is the second-best. Furthermore, his average of 21.71 is the most impressive in that same group.

Dhoni's management of Harbhajan has been masterfully strategic. By playing six of their eight matches at Chepauk, he leveraged the slow, gripping surface that perfectly suits Harbhajan's style, allowing him to deceive batsmen with turn. While Dhoni's tactical placement deserves credit, the execution is all Harbhajan; the veteran spinner has shown immense skill in putting those plans into action, taking 10 of his 13 wickets at home to prove how well he can dominate familiar conditions.

His effectiveness, however, isn't just restricted to the start of the innings. He has been just as impactful, if not more so, during the middle stretch from overs 7 to 15. Having claimed five wickets in this period, he recently proved his resilience against Punjab; after being hit for runs by KL Rahul early on, he bounced back to dismiss both Rahul and Mayank Agarwal during the middle overs.

Despite bowling fewer deliveries than many of his peers, the quality of his performance—both in terms of wicket frequency and runs conceded—surpasses most of the top ten bowlers in the middle-over phase. His average and economy rate are second only to his teammate Imran Tahir, and his strike rate of 13.20 actually edges Tahir out.

Despite this strong form, Mumbai managed to neutralize him during their victory over Chennai at Chepauk. Even though Harbhajan remained disciplined, giving up only 23 runs in his four overs, he failed to take a wicket. Chennai's loss in that game highlights just how critical Harbhajan's breakthroughs are to their success. As they prepare for a rematch in Qualifier 1 this Tuesday at Chepauk, the spinner will be determined to get the better of Mumbai this time.
