Team India is ready to take on the challenge from New Zealand in the three-match T20I series that kicks off on January 27 (Friday). Men in Blue will square off against the Black Caps in the first T20I today at JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. On the eve of the series opener, India’s T20I captain Hardik Pandya opened up on Prithvi Shaw’s chances of grabbing a spot in the playing XI.

Pandya revealed that Shubman Gill will start the series against New Zealand, edging out Prithvi Shaw, who has recently rejoined the national team after a long hiatus. Pandya described Gill's selection as a simple choice, citing his incredible ODI form, where he managed to score three centuries and one double century in his last four outings.

Ishan Kishan is expected to open the batting alongside Gill, with the captain favoring a mixed-handed opening pair to create a more dynamic start. Pandya explicitly stated that Shaw will not be in the first T20I, as Gill's recent contributions have been too significant to overlook.

Pandya further noted that while their goal is obviously to win, India must perform at their peak to defeat a formidable New Zealand side. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been sidelined for the series with a wrist injury, meaning Shaw's only opportunity to play will likely come if Gill or Kishan are rotated out of the squad.
