Shreyas Iyer set to return for the UAE leg of IPL 2026

Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has confirmed he will be available for the second half of the IPL, which kicks off in the UAE on September 19th. This follows his stint as the leader of the Delhi Capitals during the 2020 season.

Under Iyer's leadership in 2020, the Delhi Capitals made history by reaching their first final, though they ultimately fell short against the Mumbai Indians. This year, however, a shoulder injury kept Iyer on the sidelines for the first part of the competition, resulting in Rishabh Pant taking over the captaincy for the franchise.

The injury happened in Pune during the opening ODI against England, where a diving effort resulted in a dislocated left shoulder. This led to a surgical procedure in April, following the initial injury in March.

Iyer shared that his rehabilitation is almost over and he is now focusing on regaining his peak strength. He added that he is currently training and expects to be fully ready in about a month.

When asked about the captaincy, Iyer stated he is comfortable with whatever the owners decide. He praised the team's current form under Rishabh Pant, noting that their position at the top of the table with 12 points is the priority. For Iyer, the ultimate goal remains simple: helping the Delhi Capitals secure their first-ever championship trophy.
