ICC World Cup 2019: Hope and Hetmyer viewed as major threats to the Indian bowling attack

India is currently in a strong position as the only undefeated team in the competition. As they prepare to face the West Indies on Thursday, their goal is simply to extend their winning streak. While the contrasting forms of the two sides suggest India should dominate, the West Indies showed a surprising level of resilience in their last match against New Zealand, proving they are capable of challenging even the best teams when they find their rhythm.

Carlos Brathwaite is a key concern for India right now, especially after his stunning century that nearly led the Windies to victory. He'll be entering this game with immense confidence. Then there's Chris Gayle, a powerhouse who is always a threat regardless of the opponent. With Bhuvneshwar Kumar—who has historically dominated Gayle—unavailable, the responsibility falls on Mohammed Shami to neutralize him, drawing on his experience of dismissing Gayle during the 2015 World Cup.

Beyond the big names, India needs to keep a close eye on Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope. While they might not have the same global fame as Gayle or Brathwaite, they have a proven track record of causing serious problems for the Indian bowlers.Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope, who may not have such a reputation as Gayle and Brathwaite but have tormented India a lot in the past.

The duo proved their mettle during last year's five-match ODI series in India, where they both stood their ground. Hetmyer was particularly aggressive, racking up 259 runs at an average of 51.80, while Hope was nearly as impactful, scoring 250 runs with a higher average of 62.50. With a century each during that series, both players demonstrated that they possess the skill and temperament to compete against a top-tier side like India.

While that series was Hetmyer's first introduction to the Indian attack, Hope is far more familiar with them. He also played in the 2017 ODI series when India visited the Caribbean, where he managed 181 runs across four innings, including two half-centuries, averaging 45.25. Having faced India in two separate series, Hope now has the experience and the blueprint to handle their bowling.

This history gives both batsmen a psychological advantage heading into Thursday's match. Hetmyer had a slow start to the World Cup, managing modest scores of 7*, 20, and 39. However, he seems to have found his form recently, posting back-to-back fifties against Bangladesh and New Zealand. He'll likely be hungry to translate that momentum into a massive score against India.

Shai Hope is also hitting his stride, with impressive knocks of 68 and 96 against Australia and Bangladesh. In fact, his 2019 ODI form has been stellar; he has amassed 772 runs this year at an average of 55.14, a tally that includes two centuries and five other half-centuries.

If these statistics are any indication, India will have a tough task on their hands trying to dismiss these two. To secure another win, the Indian bowling unit will need to maintain the same high level of precision and dominance they've shown throughout the tournament.
