India vs South Africa: Analyzing the three candidates to open with Mayank Agarwal

Due to a hamstring injury, India's Test vice-captain Rohit Sharma is unavailable for the series against South Africa. This leaves a critical opening spot vacant, sparking a race between three potential candidates. Although the BCCI is yet to make an official announcement regarding the replacement, Priyank Panchal has been added to the squad. We will have to wait and see who finally makes the starting XI.

Priyank Panchal has a tough road ahead to secure a starting spot, as he is competing directly with Hanuma Vihari and KL Rahul. On the other hand, Mayank Agarwal has already locked in his position thanks to a dominant showing in the second Test against New Zealand, where he notched a century and a fifty. While Panchal has performed well in first-class cricket, the team management is expected to lean toward KL Rahul given his seasoned track record in international matches.

Known for his aggressive style, the right-handed Rahul shared the opening duties with Rohit during the series in England. He proved his worth by scoring 315 runs over four games, making him India's second-most productive batter with a century and a half-century to his name. A muscle injury in his left upper leg kept him out of the home series against New Zealand, but before that setback, his form across international cricket was nothing short of extraordinary.

Hanuma Vihari capitalized on his time with the 'A' team in South Africa, where he excelled and emerged as the top run-scorer of the series with 227 runs, including three half-centuries. Although he typically plays in the middle order, utilizing him as an opener could be a strategic move. This is especially viable since the middle order is already crowded with contenders like Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara.
