Since Sachin Tendulkar rose to fame at a remarkably young age, he was able to quickly identify the same kind of exceptional spark in Prithvi Shaw.
After spotting Prithvi's talent at age eight, Tendulkar cautioned the young player against letting any coach dismantle his natural batting technique.
Writing on his '100MB' app, Tendulkar recalled, 'I advised him to keep his stance and grip exactly as they are, no matter what his future coaches might say. I told him to refer them to me if they pushed for changes.' He noted that while guidance is helpful, excessive tinkering with a player's form can be counterproductive.
The legendary batsman remarked that it is vital to preserve the natural instincts of a special player, describing such talent as a divine gift.
Prithvi has been drafted into the Indian squad for the final two Tests against England. Sachin feels a sense of pride knowing that his initial intuition about the boy's talent, formed a decade ago, was correct.
Sachin recalled, 'About ten years back, a friend asked me to watch a young Prithvi play and provide some feedback. I joined him for a session and gave him a few tips to refine his game.'
Immediately after watching Prithvi play for the first time, Tendulkar told his friend, 'Do you see this? This kid is a future star for India.'
At 18, Prithvi led India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup this year. His domestic record is equally impressive, with 1,418 runs and seven centuries across 14 first-class matches, averaging 56.72.
