The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced that two new teams which will be part of the Indian Premier League from 2022. While RPSG Ventures Ltd (INR 7,090 crores) won the bid for a franchise from Lucknow, Irelia Company Pte Ltd (CVC Capital Partners – INR 5,625 crores) won the bid for a franchise from Ahmedabad.
The BCCI has confirmed a 74-match schedule for the 2022 season of the lucrative league. Every team will play a balanced split of 7 home and 7 away games. Although the number of matches per team hasn't changed, the overall tournament length has grown by 14 games. This format is a throwback to 2011, when the league also had 10 teams (including the Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala) and played a total of 74 matches.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly remarked that the enormous sums paid for the new franchises are a testament to the strength of cricket in India. He highlighted that the IPL aims to be a place 'where talent meets opportunity,' explaining that expanding the league allows more domestic Indian players to showcase their skills on a global stage.
Starting in 2022, the IPL will expand its footprint into Lucknow and Ahmedabad. The high valuation of these new teams underscores the massive financial health of the Indian cricket industry. Fans can look forward to the mega auction for the 2022 season, which is scheduled for December.
