Because Kohli is unavailable for the first two fixtures, Rajat Patidar was added to the squad this Wednesday.
The first battle of the five-match Test series between India and England begins today (January 25), 9:30 AM at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Rohit Sharma-led team will rely on spinners to work their magic on turning surfaces against England, while premier batters will also be expected to perform well in the absence of veteran Virat Kohli. With Kohli only available after the first two games, India has added Rajat Patidar to its roster for the first two Tests on Wednesday.
Patidar secured his place in the national side thanks to a dominant showing against the England Lions. Representing India-A in Ahmedabad, the 30-year-old right-handed batsman put on a clinic in the first four-day match, scoring an impressive 151 runs from 158 balls.
During a pre-match briefing, captain Rohit Sharma shed light on why Patidar was chosen over Kohli. Rohit questioned when the younger generation would get their shot if not now, explaining that it is essential to bring fresh faces into the fold. He noted that providing these players with a supportive environment at home is better than exposing them to the harsh realities of overseas tours before they are ready.
Rohit believes it is vital to create pathways for young talent. However, he clarified that this doesn't mean the door is shut for experienced players like Ajinkya Rahane or Cheteshwar Pujara; as long as they maintain their fitness and keep putting up big numbers, they will always be welcome back in the squad.
