On Wednesday, Alexander Zverev delivered a masterclass in the Australian Open quarterfinals, eliminating the second seed Carlos Alcaraz. By defeating the World No. 2 with a final score of 6-1, 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4, Zverev achieved a career first: beating a Top 5 opponent at a Grand Slam. This marks his second consecutive win over the young Spaniard since the Nitto ATP Finals in November, pushing their head-to-head series to 5-3 in Zverev's favor. This breakthrough victory provides a huge boost to the German's confidence, especially since he had failed to beat a Top 5 player in his last ten major attempts.
Alexander Zverev produced a stunning performance to knock out the second-seed Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of the Australia Open on Wednesday. Germany’s Zverev earned his first Grand Slam victory against a Top 5 opponent by bringing down World No.2 Alcaraz 6-1, 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4 to reach the semi-finals in Melbourne. It was the German’s second victory over Alcaraz in a row, having defeated the 20-year-old Spaniard at the Nitto ATP Finals in November, and he now leads the Lexus ATP Head2Head series 5-3. The manner of Zverev’s recent victory against the top-ranked player will provide him with a tremendous confidence boost who had not beaten a Top 5 opponent at a major in ten previous attempts.
The sixth seed, Zverev, is heading to his second semi-final at Melbourne Park, where he'll battle top-seed Daniil Medvedev for a place in the final. Medvedev's own path was far more exhausting, as he barely survived a five-set struggle against Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, winning 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to reach his third semi-final in Melbourne. Although Medvedev leads their overall tour rivalry 11-7 over 18 matches, the two will meet for the first time on a Grand Slam stage this Friday, January 26, at the Rod Laver Arena.
Zverev came out swinging against Alcaraz, dominating the first set and barely giving up any games on his own serve. The 26-year-old maintained this momentum into the second set, capitalizing on Alcaraz's increasing errors to break his serve twice. For the first two sets, Zverev was nearly perfect, boasting a first-serve percentage of around 90% and controlling the match both from the baseline and at the net.
Zverev kept the pressure high throughout the third set, but a brief dip in concentration while serving for the match allowed Alcaraz to fight back. The Spaniard mounted a stunning recovery, forcing a tiebreak which he eventually won from a seemingly impossible position. At that moment, the crowd was convinced the match was headed for a dramatic fifth set.
The momentum didn't last, however. At 4-4 in the fourth set, Alcaraz stumbled, allowing Zverev to break his serve. From there, the German remained composed and clinical with his own serve to close out the match. It was a gritty, courageous performance that stands as one of the most significant wins of Zverev's career.
Zverev will need to be at his absolute best in the semi-finals. He is haunted by his only Grand Slam final appearance at the 2020 US Open, where he suffered a heartbreaking loss to Dominic Thiem despite leading two sets to zero.
