Due to a hamstring injury, Indian opener Rohit Sharma is unable to participate in the three-match Test series. The team's vice-captain suffered a blow to his hand during a Mumbai net session, which caused an old injury in his left hamstring to flare up. The BCCI has confirmed the diagnosis and announced that he will miss the series. The injury happened while he was practicing with the team's specialist, Raghavendra.
Priyank Panchal, the captain of India-A, has been selected by the BCCI to step in for Rohit. The right-handed opener has a proven track record, notably scoring a triple century during the 2016-17 season when Gujarat won the Ranji Trophy. His domestic experience is extensive, with 24 hundreds and over 7,000 runs in 100 first-class games.
Panchal is already familiar with the challenges of batting in South Africa. Just last month, he put up a strong performance for India-A against South Africa-A, scoring 96 in the first four-day match before a finger injury hampered him. Having maintained an average of over 40 and now being completely fit, he is well-prepared for the call-up.
While the BCCI has yet to officially designate a stand-in vice-captain, it is anticipated that KL Rahul will assist Virat Kohli during the series. Rohit's absence is a significant blow to the batting lineup, especially given South Africa's dangerous pace bowling attack. Since transitioning to an opening role in October 2019, Rohit has been highly effective, accumulating 1,462 runs at an impressive average of 58.48.
Having been the standout performer in the series against England and the most consistent Test batter over the past year, Rohit will be deeply missed as India strives to secure its first-ever Test series victory on South African soil.
