Virat Kohli: Our momentum has peaked at exactly the right time

Speaking at a press briefing, Virat Kohli noted that England will likely enter the fourth Test with intense energy. He acknowledged that if the Nottingham game was a struggle, this next one will be even more demanding because the opposition will be fighting hard to recover, meaning India will need to step up their game even further to get the desired result.

India secured a massive 203-run victory over England thanks to a comprehensive team effort. The fast-bowling unit—consisting of Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, and Mohammed Shami, along with the support of Hardik Pandya—was key to the win. However, Captain Virat Kohli clarified that he doesn't intend to switch to an all-pace lineup for the Southampton Test.

Kohli questioned the logic of an all-pace strategy, mentioning that in previous encounters at this ground, the pitch developed heavy footmarks that allowed spinners to dominate the second innings. Because of this, he believes sticking with their current balance is the best approach.

Looking back at their history here from four years ago, Kohli mentioned that it's difficult to identify a single mistake; it was likely a combination of England playing at a higher level and the Indian team lacking the experience to effectively close out the game while holding a lead.

Kohli added that the team is now in a thrilling position. Having found their rhythm after being down 2-0—a point where many expected them to be completely overwhelmed or swept aside—they have turned the tide of the series at a critical juncture.

When questioned about potential tactical shifts for the Southampton match, Kohli stated that he sees no reason to change his own batting approach or the methods used by his teammates in the previous game.

He concluded by reminding the team to stay adaptable, noting that if the pitch behaves unexpectedly, they must be flexible and avoid entering the game with rigid, preconceived ideas about how to play.

Beyond the pitch itself, Kohli highlighted the weather as a major variable. With cold temperatures persisting over the last few days and expected to continue, he believes the team will need to constantly reassess the conditions, as they can shift very quickly.
