Right before the start of the T20I series against South Africa, Team India suffered a major blow. Captain KL Rahul has been forced to withdraw due to a right groin injury picked up during Wednesday's second practice drill. Additionally, Kuldeep Yadav will miss the series after taking a hit to his right hand while practicing in the nets.
The All-India Senior Selection Committee has tasked wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant with leading the Men in Blue against South Africa, supported by Hardik Pandya as vice-captain for the home series. No direct replacements have been named for Rahul or Kuldeep so far. Both injured players will report to the NCA for a full medical assessment and to determine the next steps for their rehabilitation.
Rahul's injury streak is concerning, as this is the second time in four months he's been sidelined; he previously missed the February T20Is against the West Indies due to a left hamstring strain. To fill the void at the top, Ruturaj Gaikwad is expected to partner Ishan Kishan. This left-right opening combination could provide India with a dynamic start to their innings.
With Kuldeep unavailable, the spin attack will rely heavily on Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel. This series also gives Rishabh Pant a prime opportunity to demonstrate his leadership capabilities. The opening match between India and the Proteas begins today at 7:30 pm at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
