Lasith Malinga’s 35th birthday

To mark the 35th birthday of the Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga, let's look back at the two hat-tricks that made him a World Cup icon.

Out of the 44 hat-tricks recorded in ODI cricket since 1971, only nine have happened on the grand stage of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

The legendary Lasith Malinga managed the incredible feat of claiming two separate hat-tricks during the World Cup, securing his place in the history books.

Sri Lanka v South Africa (2007)

Malinga holds a unique double record: he is the only player to achieve more than one hat-trick in a World Cup, and the only man to ever take three hat-tricks in all of ODI history.

During the 2007 tournament, Malinga went beyond a typical hat-trick by taking four wickets in four balls to help Sri Lanka win. While South Africa were cruising and needed only 4 runs from 5 balls, Malinga stunned Shaun Pollock with a slower delivery and then dismissed Andrew Hall on the next ball.

He completed the hat-trick at the start of the following over, when Jacques Kallis was caught behind for 86.

Malinga actually achieved four wickets in four balls by clean bowling Makhaya Ntini, though South Africa ultimately managed to chase the target with one wicket remaining.

Sri Lanka v Kenya (2011)

In 2011, during a match against Kenya, Malinga made history as the first bowler to ever record two hat-tricks in the Cricket World Cup.

Similar to his first one, this hat-trick spanned across two different overs. He started by trapping Tanmay Mishram LBW on the final delivery of his seventh over.

He then began his eighth over by delivering two almost identical balls to claim the remaining wickets of

Kenya were outclassed by Malinga's brilliance in 2011, a performance that saw him become the first player to secure two World Cup hat-tricks.

Just like his previous achievement, Malinga's hat-trick took place over two separate overs, beginning with Tanmay Mishra being trapped LBW on the last ball of the seventh over.

He then used two nearly identical deliveries at the start of his eighth over to dismiss Peter Ongondo and Shem Ngoche, completing his second World Cup hat-trick.
