Ravi Shastri outlines his preferred pace battery for India's 2026 Asia Cup squad

With the 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka fast approaching, the 'Men in Blue' are facing a critical juncture. Mohammed Siraj has been in stellar form, essentially carrying the ODI attack during Jasprit Bumrah's absence and climbing to fourth in the world rankings. Despite this success, former coach Ravi Shastri believes Siraj's role should be that of a backup option rather than a first-choice starter for the upcoming tournament.
Men in Blue have a huge assignment coming up in the next few days, as the team will head to Sri Lanka to compete in the Asia Cup 2023. Mohammed Siraj, who has led India’s bowling attack in ODIs in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, will be held in high regard. In fact, Siraj’s efforts have been so outstanding that he is now placed fourth in the ICC ODI bowler’s rankings. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, on the other hand, believes Siraj should only be utilized as a backup and not as a starter in the Asia Cup 2023.

Shastri suggests that the roster should be bolstered by all-rounders Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur to complement Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja. In his view, the primary strike force should consist of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, leaving Siraj as the support. This strategy would ensure the playing XI has four fast-bowling options, integrating the versatility of Pandya and Thakur.

During a conversation with Star Sports, Shastri explained his reasoning, stating that opting for both Axar and Shardul gives the team more options. He also mentioned the importance of having Sanju Samson on standby as a quick-response replacement for the wicket-keeping position.

Explaining his logic, Shastri emphasized that the pace attack is the foundation of the team. He pointed out that since Hardik Pandya already fills an all-rounder role, a fit Bumrah and Shami should be the first two names on the sheet. In this setup, Siraj acts as a backup, while Shardul—who showed great form during the ODI series in the West Indies—provides further depth. This leaves space for one additional player in the lineup.

Addressing Jasprit Bumrah's return after an 11-month injury layoff, Shastri highlighted the three-match T20I series against Ireland starting August 18 as a vital litmus test. He cautioned that bowling in the nets is entirely different from the pressure of a real game, noting that 'net fitness' doesn't equal 'match fitness.' Therefore, these games are essential to prove Bumrah is truly ready for high-intensity competition.

The BCCI selection committee is expected to unveil the official Indian roster for the 2023 Asia Cup this coming Sunday, August 20.
