Shane Lee believes Rahane is the right choice for the Test captaincy

Despite his status as perhaps the finest batsman currently playing, Virat Kohli has recently come under fire, with critics suggesting the 33-year-old should hand over the captaincy to either Rohit Sharma or Ajinkya Rahane.

Rahane's successful stint as interim captain, where he led a struggling side to a stunning Border-Gavaskar Trophy win in Kohli's absence, has led many supporters to lobby selectors for his permanent appointment as Test captain.

Former Australian all-rounder Shane Lee shares this view, arguing that removing the burden of leadership from Kohli would enable him to concentrate entirely on his performance with the bat.

Shane Lee notes that Kohli's insistence on rigid professionalism and high standards in fitness and fielding has left the squad feeling tense and afraid of making errors. He perceives a much more laid-back environment when Rahane is in charge. (Lee is also the elder brother of the legendary Australian pacer Brett Lee).

While Lee finds it unlikely that Kohli would step aside, he admits that if he were a selector, he would appoint Rahane as captain. This would free Kohli to showcase his batting brilliance without the stress of leading, which Lee believes would benefit the team as a whole.
