Former Australian captain Mark Taylor believes that if the 2020 T20 World Cup is pushed back, the IPL's 13th season could potentially fill that gap. Taylor elaborated on the practical challenges of the current global situation, highlighting that bringing 15 international teams to Australia for 45 matches in October and November is a logistical hurdle, especially when factoring in the mandatory 14-day quarantine period for all players.
Taylor points out that Cricket Australia is likely weighing the possibility of hosting the IPL 13, given the uncertainty surrounding the T20 World Cup. The primary motivation is financial stability; bringing Indian stars back for a comprehensive tour (including 4 Tests, 3 ODIs, and 3 T20s) is far more lucrative. The numbers speak for themselves: the IPL generates about $512 million, dwarfing the $80 million expected from the ICC T20 event. Furthermore, he mentioned that any shift in the World Cup timeline could cause a direct clash with the Test series between India and England.
Taylor suggested that if the India-Australia tour goes ahead, the Adelaide Cricket Ground would be the ideal hub for all three formats due to its integrated hotel facilities. However, the CEO of Cricket Australia clarified that the teams will only be able to confirm the October-November series by August 2020.
