The BCCI is currently in the process of finding a successor to Rahul Dravid, and Gautam Gambhir has now opened up about the possibility of taking over as the head coach for the men's senior squad. Despite being widely viewed as the top contender for the position, Gambhir had previously avoided commenting on the matter. His candidacy is bolstered by his recent success with the Kolkata Knight Riders, whom he led to an IPL title in 2024.
With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) still looking for Rahul Dravid’s successor, former India opener Gautam Gambhir has finally spoken out about becoming the next head coach of the men’s senior squad. Gambhir previously chose to remain silent despite emerging as the frontrunner for the leadership role at Team India. Gambhir made a spectacular return to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), leading the franchise to its third Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 2024.
Discussing the prospect of following in Dravid's footsteps, Gambhir confessed his eagerness to work with the national team. He explained that coaching your own country is the highest possible honor in the sport, as it involves representing 1.4 billion people across the globe, remarks he shared during an event in Abu Dhabi.
While interacting with students at Medeor Hospital in Abu Dhabi, Gambhir was asked if he would take the job to help India end its long drought of ICC World Cup trophies. He noted that although he had been asked this many times before without giving a clear answer, he was ready to respond now, adding that the support of 1.4 billion Indians is what truly drives a World Cup victory.
He concluded that if the entire nation stands behind the team and the players play with a fearless mindset, India will inevitably lift the World Cup. This transition comes as the T20 World Cup marks the final chapter of Rahul Dravid's tenure as head coach. Rohit Sharma's squad is set to launch their tournament journey against Ireland on June 5, followed by a highly anticipated clash with rivals Pakistan in New York on June 9.
