Promising young bowler sidelined by injury before 2026 Asian Games

Both the Indian men's and women's cricket squads are gearing up for the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, taking place between September 19 and October 8. The competition will be played in the T20I format. With the main roster away for the 2023 ODI World Cup, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named captain for the men, whereas Harmanpreet Kaur will head the women's team.

The men's team is scheduled to play their final eight matches starting October 3. However, India has faced a setback as Shivam Mavi, a young pace bowler, is expected to miss the event due to a recent injury. The full details of his medical condition are still pending, but it is anticipated that Umran Malik will step in to fill the spot of the 24-year-old right-armer.

While there is no official confirmation yet, sources indicate that the selectors first considered Yash Thakur from the standby list. Unfortunately, Thakur is also dealing with a back injury, which paved the way for Umran Malik's inclusion. Additionally, due to tight space and regulations at the Asian Games village, the squad will travel without any extra reserves.

Before heading to the games, the team will gather in Bangalore for a short two-week training stint. The coaching staff will be led by VVS Laxman, supported by bowling coach Sariaj Bahutule and fielding coach Munish Bali.
