During the event, owner Sajiv Goenka presented Zaheer with the No.34 jersey, the same number he wore throughout his international and IPL playing days. This appointment marks Zaheer's return to the league after two years away. Previously, the 45-year-old spent several years with the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, between 2018 and 2022.
Zaheer's previous roles at Mumbai Indians included serving as the director of cricket and the head of global development. Because Morne Morkel left to join Gautam Gambhir's coaching team, LSG is currently without a bowling coach. It is understood that Zaheer will dedicate his time during the off-season to scouting new talent and helping players improve their game.
Prior to transitioning into coaching, Zaheer played for the Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Over 100 IPL matches, he took 102 wickets while maintaining an economy rate of 7.58, with his final game taking place in 2017. On the coaching side, LSG is led by Justin Langer, who took over from Andy Flower in 2024 and will continue to work alongside assistants Adam Voges and Lance Klusener.
