Manchester City's all-time leading scorer, Sergio Aguero, will be leaving the team upon the expiration of his contract, marking the end of a ten-year tenure.
During his time at the Etihad Stadium, the Argentine forward racked up 257 goals, establishing himself as a cornerstone of the club's evolution under the Abu Dhabi ownership. While injuries have kept him off the pitch for most of this season—resulting in only 14 appearances—he officially announced his departure on Twitter. Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak emphasized that Aguero's contributions over the last decade were invaluable, stating that the striker has left an indelible mark on the fans and the wider footballing community.
Khaldoon Al Mubarak the club’s chairman said Sergio’s contribution over the 10 years to Manchester City can’t be overstated. Mubarak also said that the Argentine has etched his mark in the memories of the club’s fans and maybe even with people who simply love football.
To honor his legacy, the chairman revealed that a statue of Aguero will be built to stand with fellow legends David Silva and Vincent Kompany. This trio, along with Yaya Toure, was instrumental in driving City's trophy-laden decade.
Having arrived from Atletico Madrid in 2011, Aguero enjoyed an incredible peak where he scored 28 or more goals in every single competition for six straight seasons. With 181 Premier League goals, he remains the most successful overseas player in the league and sits fourth on the all-time scoring charts.
Taking to Twitter, Aguero expressed that he has formed unbreakable bonds with the club's supporters, who will always hold a special place in his heart.
The striker promised the fans that he would put in a maximum effort for the remainder of the season to help the team secure further silverware.
Manchester City is currently chasing a historic quadruple, competing for the Premier League title, the FA Cup semifinals, and the League Cup final. They are also eyeing the Champions League—the one trophy Aguero has yet to lift with the club. To date, his trophy cabinet includes four Premier League titles, five League Cups, and one FA Cup.
Since Pep Guardiola took the helm in 2016, Aguero successfully adapted his game to align with the Spanish manager's tactical philosophy.
He evolved into a more complete forward, showing a greater ability to drop deep and create chances for his teammates without sacrificing his lethal finishing ability.
