Carabao Cup Semifinal: Chelsea comes out on top in the first clash with Tottenham

Chelsea put on a commanding performance at Stamford Bridge, walking away with a convincing 2-0 win over Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinals. The Blues were the better side throughout, dominating possession and creating plenty of openings to secure their trip to Wembley, even if some chances went begging. Much of this success can be attributed to Thomas Tuchel's tactical adjustments, which left Spurs struggling to cope with the pressure.

With a comfortable cushion in hand, Chelsea now looks forward to the second leg. They hit the ground running from the very start, utilizing a bold 4-2-2-2 formation that paired Kai Havertz and Romelu Lukaku up front. Havertz set the tone early, scoring in the 5th minute after receiving a precise ball from Marcos Alonso, who had just intercepted a Spurs pass.

After cutting inside from the left of the box, Havertz unleashed a low strike. Davinson Sanchez tried his best to stop it, but the shot ultimately found its way across the line. Romelu Lukaku, returning to the fold after being sidelined for a game, was active and dangerous, yet luck wasn't on his side—even a close-range header failed to hit the target.

The hosts doubled their lead following a chaotic moment in the Tottenham defense. In the 34th minute, a bit of fortune played into Chelsea's hands when Spurs essentially scored an own goal. It was a strange, almost farcical sequence: Japhet Tanganga attempted to clear Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick, but the ball ricocheted off Ben Davies’ shoulder and looped into the net.

The first half ended 2-0, though the scoreline could have been even wider if Lukaku had converted a cross from Ziyech, but his header lacked the necessary direction. As the second half began, Tottenham found their footing and started competing more effectively. By the 50th minute, they earned a free-kick after Tanguy Ndombele was fouled by Malang Sarr.

Harry Kane stepped up and fired a powerful shot from outside the area, but Kepa Arrizabalaga reacted sharply, diving low to his left to keep the clean sheet. Chelsea continued to push for a third, but the Spurs' backline tightened up and held firm for the remainder of the match.

It was a deserved result for Chelsea, especially given how difficult it usually is to break down Tottenham's defense. Now, the pressure is on Spurs to produce a flawless performance in the second leg if they want to reach Wembley. Meanwhile, Liverpool and Arsenal are scheduled for their own semifinal matchups on January 13th and 20th.
