The Netherlands international is currently a free agent and hasn't yet committed to a new team. He confirmed that Barcelona is an option and that they've been in touch, though he notes that plenty of other clubs are interested in his services.
Currently a free agent, the Netherlands midfielder has not decided where he will move next. As a free agent, Georginio Wijnaldum admitted he spoke to Barcelona about a move to Camp Nou, but the departing Liverpool midfielder claims he is interested in “many clubs”.
With his time at Liverpool coming to an end this summer, the Dutch star is looking for a new project to take on.
Many expected him to join Ronald Koeman in Spain, but because they haven't finalized a deal, other teams still have a chance to sign him.
Upon arriving at the Dutch camp for the Euros, Wijnaldum commented on his uncertain future: “I cannot deny talks [with Barcelona]. My contract is up, so it’s a challenging situation for a lot of clubs.”
Barcelona seems to have the upper hand in the race for Wijnaldum, bolstered by the fact that his representatives have been spotted in Spain. However, the club has hit a snag in finalizing the signing of the former Liverpool man.
It feels like the 30-year-old is destined for Barcelona, but both parties are currently unable to put pen to paper and close the deal.
Reports from Voetbal International suggest that Frank de Boer, the Netherlands head coach, is blocking Barcelona's medical staff from accessing the player at the Euro 2020 training camp.
De Boer clarified that any medical examinations will have to wait until the tournament has concluded.
After arriving at the national team's base on Sunday, Wijnaldum posted on Instagram: “After a week of rest, I am here with the team. Ready for a new challenge.”
The Netherlands are gearing up for the Euros with friendly matches against Scotland this Wednesday and Georgia next Sunday. They'll be competing in a group alongside North Macedonia, Austria, and Ukraine.
