PSG delivered a crushing 5-1 defeat to the title-holders Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. With this result, the Parisian giants have extended their league winning streak to 14 matches, firmly cementing their lead at the top of the table with a 13-point gap ahead of Marseille. Meanwhile, Lille's disappointing form saw them slide to 11th place. It was a one-sided affair where PSG's clinical approach exploited a struggling Lille backline.
Paris Saint-Germain ran riot to secure a convincing 5-1 victory over the reigning champions Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Paris Saint-Germain extended their winning streak to 14 games in Ligue 1 by thrashing Lille. PSG is comfortably placed at the top of the Ligue 1 table with a 13-point lead over Marseille. Meanwhile, Lille dropped one place to the 11th spot. It was a clinical and dominating performance for the visitors. A poor defense from the hosts aided PSG to score more goals.
Danilo Pereira led the scoring with a brace, supported by individual goals from the duo of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, as well as Presnel Kimpembe. PSG never allowed their opponents to find a rhythm, maintaining a lethal edge in front of goal. By scoring five times from just seven attempts on target, they finished the game with an impressive 71% conversion rate.
The deadlock was broken early on due to a significant error from Lille's goalkeeper, Ivo Grbic. He failed to handle a cross from Nuno Mendes, gifting Danilo an easy tap-in in the 10th minute. Lille didn't give up immediately, however, and managed to pull a goal back to make it 1-1 in the 28th minute.
Sven Botman managed to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma with a brilliant piece of skill; although the PSG keeper managed to touch the ball, he couldn't keep it out. PSG reclaimed the lead when Presnel Kimpembe capitalized on a misplaced corner from Messi. Once again, Grbic struggled, failing to claim the ball and leaving Kimpembe to score from a mere 5 yards out.
Shortly after, Lionel Messi opened his 2022 season account. Following some clever build-up play by Mbappe, Messi received the ball and produced a sophisticated chip over Grbic from 12 yards. It was a piece of class from the Argentine captain, marking his second league goal of the campaign.
Lille attempted to shore up their defense after the break, but PSG remained too powerful. Danilo secured his second goal early in the second half with a strike from the edge of the area that took a deflection and flew past Grbic. The scoring was rounded off in the 67th minute by Kylian Mbappe, who hammered a stunning 20-yard shot into the top corner to make it 5-1.
Mauricio Pochettino's squad is clearly hitting their stride just in time for a high-stakes stretch of the season. The team is also looking forward to the return of Neymar from injury, who is expected to be available for their upcoming Champions League encounter with Real Madrid in nine days.
