Premier League: A draw against Leicester City puts Chelsea in the driver's seat for third place

By securing a 1-1 draw with Leicester City, Chelsea have all but locked in third place in the Premier League standings. A brilliant strike from defender Marco Alonso rescued a point for the Blues in front of their home crowd at Stamford Bridge. Heading into the final matchday, Chelsea's spot is secure with 71 points. While they are far behind Manchester City at the top, they maintain a three-point cushion over Tottenham. Furthermore, Chelsea's superior goal difference of 18 makes a late comeback by Spurs highly unlikely.

It is practically a miracle that Chelsea managed to claim third place, given how much they struggled throughout the season without N’Golo Kante. The French star was plagued by injuries, missing more than half of the team's matches. Kante is the engine that drives the team, and with him playing only 40% of the games, Chelsea lacked the consistency needed to turn draws into wins.

Coming off a disappointing FA Cup final defeat to Liverpool, Chelsea found themselves trailing early when James Maddison scored in the 6th minute. It was a lucky break for Leicester, as it turned out to be their only shot on target for the entire match. The goal originated from a long ball by Kasper Schmeichel to Timothy Castagne; a deflected pass then fell perfectly for Maddison, who curled a precise shot past Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea fought back before halftime thanks to Marco Alonso, who equalized after a pinpoint cross from Reece James. James delivered a perfectly weighted ball to the far post, allowing the Spanish defender to connect cleanly and score. The teams headed into the locker rooms tied at 1-1.

The second half was a one-sided affair in terms of control, with Chelsea maintaining 68% possession and a pass accuracy of 92%. Despite their dominance and numerous opportunities to win the game, they couldn't find the decisive goal. Thiago Silva attempted to create a chance with a deep ball into the box, but Hakim Ziyech couldn't make it count. Ziyech nearly scored from a free-kick, and Romelu Lukaku saw a header drift wide.

Christian Pulisic had a golden opportunity to snatch a victory but inexplicably fired his shot wide from just eight yards out. Chelsea will wrap up their season against Watford on May 22. Meanwhile, Leicester City, currently in ninth, will try to secure a top-10 finish in their clash against Southampton on the same evening.
