Manchester City displayed total dominance at the Etihad this Sunday, cruising to a 3-1 win over Aston Villa. It was a vital rebound for the squad following their recent slip-up against Tottenham. By controlling the game from start to finish, City not only shifted the momentum back in their favor but also closed the distance to Arsenal's lead to a mere three points. A first-half blitz featuring goals from Rodri, Gundogan, and Mahrez put the game out of reach early on, though Ollie Watkins did manage to score for Villa later in the match.
Manchester City produced a brilliant effort to register a comfortable 3-1 win over Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Manchester City got back on track following last weekend’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and dominated the game right from the start. City produced an aggressive response to the Premier League’s charge sheet as they comprehensively defeated Aston Villa to close the gap within three points of leaders Arsenal. Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan, and Riyad Mahrez all found the net in the first half of the game to put the defending champions in a commanding position. Ollie Watkins scored Villa’s consolation goal.
Pep Guardiola's side wasted no time, finding the net in the fourth minute when Rodri converted a corner delivered by Riyad Mahrez. The goal came from a sharp, downward header at the near post that left Martinez unable to react. The lead was then doubled in the 39th minute through an assist from Erling Haaland to Gundogan.
The second goal was a team effort: De Bruyne sent a long ball toward Haaland, who shielded the ball on the right side of the penalty area before drilling a low cross into the path of Gundogan, who finished clinically. This mirrored Gundogan's previous success against Villa this season. Shortly after, City were awarded a penalty after Jacob Ramsey fouled Jack Grealish inside the box. Mahrez stepped up and calmly fooled Emiliano Martinez to make it 3-0.
With a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime, City entered the second half in total control. While Aston Villa pushed hard to get back into the game, their efforts only bore fruit in the 61st minute. Ollie Watkins scored a quality goal, receiving a sharp pass from Douglas Luiz, weaving past Akanji at the edge of the area, and slotting the ball past Ederson. Despite this, Villa lacked the firepower to mount a genuine comeback.
A major concern for City, however, was Erling Haaland, who had to be substituted at halftime due to a thigh injury. His availability for Wednesday's massive clash against Arsenal at the Emirates remains uncertain. Given that thigh issues can be tricky to resolve in just three days, Pep Guardiola may have to rely on Phil Foden if the Norwegian striker isn't fit to play.
