The AIFF confirmed this Monday that the Indian national football team will travel to Abu Dhabi, UAE, for a friendly match against Oman on December 27, serving as a crucial preparation step for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup.
This game marks the conclusion of a three-match friendly series against teams competing in the 2019 Asian Cup (running Jan 5 – Feb 1). It's a chance for India to bounce back after a shaky start to their preparations, which included a 0-0 stalemate with China and a tight 1-0 loss to Jordan.
Head coach Stephen Constantine views the match against Oman as a vital tactical rehearsal, as Oman's style of play is very similar to Bahrain and the UAE—both of whom India will face in the first round. Constantine emphasized that this similarity allows the team to anticipate the specific difficulties they will encounter in the group stages. He stressed the importance of finding their rhythm and ensuring every player is clear on their role, noting that while the Jordan match was tough, it served as a valuable learning experience. According to Constantine, the current Indian squad is a completely different, evolving entity that grows stronger every day. While India is placed in Group A and Oman in Group F, India will kick off its actual tournament journey against Thailand on January 6 in Abu Dhabi. The tournament itself will be hosted across three UAE cities. In terms of global standing, FIFA's October rankings place Oman at 84th, with India following at 97th.

उन्होंने आगे कहा कि, “अब हमें लय स्थापित करना है और यह सुनिश्चित करना है कि, हम सभी यह जानें कि हमें क्या करना है। जॉर्डन के खिलाफ हमारे आखिरी मैच में, परिस्थितियां असाधारण थीं और यह सभी खिलाड़ियों के लिए कुछ अच्छा सीखने का एक अनुभव था।”
कोच कांसटेनटाइन ने कहा है कि, आज भारतीय टीम ‘बिल्कुल अलग’ है। “आज हम एक बिल्कुल ही अलग टीम हैं और दिन-ब-दिन और बेहतर हो रहे हैं। यह मुकाबला हमारे लिए एक अच्छा मुकाबला साबित होना चाहिए।”
भारत को एशिया कप में ग्रुप ए में डाला गया है जबकि ओमान ग्रुप एफ में है। भारत अपने एशिया कप प्रतिस्पर्धा की शुरूआत 6 जनवरी 2019 को थाईलैंड के विरुद्ध अबू धाबी में ही करेगा। यह एशिया कप संयुक्त अरब अमीरात के तीन शहरों में आयोजित किया जाएगा। FIFA द्वारा अक्टूबर में जारी की गई रैंकिंग के अनुसार ओमान 84 वे स्थान पर है जबकि भारत की रैंकिंग 97 है।
