PKL Season 9: Puneri Paltan holds onto two of their most promising young talents

The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) is a major sporting phenomenon in India, bringing together the finest kabaddi players from the domestic circuit and abroad. Season 8 was particularly challenging due to strict COVID-19 protocols, yet it delivered high-stakes drama. Dabangg Delhi eventually emerged victorious, putting on a masterclass performance to defeat the highly-rated Patna Pirates and seize the title.

The eighth season was a breakthrough year for many newcomers who carved out a reputation for themselves. In particular, a handful of young Indian athletes earned widespread acclaim for their spectacular plays. Consequently, several franchises have opted to retain these rising stars ahead of the upcoming Season 9 auction in August.

Securing a spot in the squad early on gives these young players a significant confidence boost. With the ability to retain four players under the 'New Young Players' designation, teams are hoping their stars can replicate and improve their previous form. For Puneri Paltan, this strategy includes keeping both Aslam Inamdar and Mohit Goyat.

Aslam Inamdar established himself as one of the premier players of Season 8. As an all-rounder for Puneri Paltan, he showed versatility in both offensive and defensive roles, though he truly shone as a raider, racking up 189 points over 23 games. His efficiency was impressive, boasting a 48% strike rate and a 48% tackle rate, while maintaining a high survival rate of 87.13%.

Unsurprisingly, Puneri Paltan moved quickly to ensure Inamdar stayed with the team. He is viewed as a cornerstone of their strategy for the upcoming season; without his contributions, their championship hopes would be diminished. His impact last year was clear, featuring seven super raids and five Super 10s.

Mohit Goyat, just 21, was another vital asset for Puneri Paltan last season. The all-rounder contributed 187 points across 21 matches—contributions that proved pivotal in guiding the team into the playoff stages.

With a raid success rate of 45% and averaging over 7.57 points per match, Goyat proved his consistency. By keeping him, Puneri Paltan is doubling down on the core group of players who drove their strong performance last year.
