Andrey Rublev fights back against Rune to win his first Masters 1000 title

Andrey Rublev has earned his first ATP Masters 1000 championship after a hard-fought 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Holger Rune in the Monte-Carlo Masters final. Rublev, seeded fifth, navigated a volatile match lasting nearly three hours, taking advantage of the young Dane's inconsistency. The clash featured two of the most aggressive ball-strikers currently playing, and in the end, the Russian emerged victorious at the sunny Monte Carlo Country Club. With 33 winners and a stunning comeback from 1-4 down in the third set, the 25-year-old secured the biggest title of his professional life.
Russian Andrey Rublev clinched his first ATP Masters 1000 title after defeating Danish Holger Rune 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 in the Monte-Carlo Masters final. Fifth seed Rublev made the most of teenager Rune’s nerves to win a see-saw battle that lasted for two hours and 43 minutes. It was an intense clash between the two biggest ball-strikers on the ATP Tour, and finally, the Russian prevailed to claim the most prestigious title of his career at a sun-drenched Monte Carlo Country Club. The 25-year-old Russian struck 33 winners and rallied from 1-4 in the deciding set to earn the 13th and biggest title of his career.

Keeping his composure during the most critical moments, Rublev sealed the win with a fifth ace and celebrated emotionally on the court. This success comes after two previous final losses in 2021 at Cincinnati and Monte Carlo. With this result, Rublev has now won 18 matches on the tour this season and holds a 1-2 record in ATP Masters 1000 finals.

Rune, following in the footsteps of Rafael Nadal (2005) as one of the youngest finalists in Monte Carlo history, was chasing his second Masters 1000 title. Early on, both athletes relied on powerful groundstrokes, but the 19-year-old Rune used clever drop shots to break Rublev's rhythm in the first set. Rune pushed his lead to 4-2, though a forehand error allowed Rublev a brief opening to break back. However, Rune showed great resolve by saving seven of eight break points before breaking in the final game to take the set.

Rublev refused to back down and shifted the momentum in the second set. He dominated his service games, winning 90% of his first-serve points, and played more precisely on the return. By using his raw power to push Rune deep behind the baseline, Rublev secured two breaks to force a deciding third set.

The final set started strongly for Rune, who used sharp angles to break early and build a commanding 4-1 lead. Rublev stayed patient, breaking back in the seventh game and continuing his surge. The turning point came at 5-5 when a double fault from Rune at 30/40 handed Rublev the decisive break. Rublev then served it out to win, moving his head-to-head record against Rune to 2-1.

\"I kept hoping that I would get at least one real opportunity,\" Rublev admitted. \"I'm honestly speechless and just incredibly happy; it took a lot of struggle to finally win this title,\" he added.
