Indian contingent off to a flying start at the Swiss Open 300

PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth have both advanced to the Round of 16 at the Swiss Open Super 300 after successful singles debuts. Sindhu dominated her first match against Turkey's Yigit Neslihan, winning 21-16, 21-19 in a brief 42-minute encounter. Srikanth's path was more challenging, as he had to overcome a determined effort from his compatriot, Sameer Verma, eventually securing the victory. The second-seeded Sindhu is now set to take on the USA's Iris Wang on Thursday.

Looking back to 2015, Srikanth previously won this event, having defeated Sameer Verma (the 2018 champion) in the opening round with a score of 18-21, 21-18, 21-11.

As India looks toward the Tokyo Olympics, Srikanth remains a key medal hopeful. He is moving on to face France's Thomas Rouxel in the Round of 16, following Rouxel's straight-sets victory (21-18, 21-14) over Xiaodong Sheng of Canada.

Sourabh Verma also secured a win, beating Switzerland's Christian Kirchmayr 21-19, 21-18, and will now clash with Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand. Meanwhile, Ajay Jayaram comfortably beat Thailand's Sitthikom Thammasin 21-12, 21-13; he is now preparing for a tough Round of 16 match against Denmark's third seed, Rasmus Gemke.

It wasn't all wins for India, as H S Prannoy suffered an early exit after a three-set battle against France's Mark Calijouw, losing 19-21, 21-9, 17-21. However, the mixed doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa delivered a standout performance, taking down the world number 8 Indonesian pair, Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja, 21-18, 21-10. This mirrors their success from January at the Toyota Thailand Open Super 1000, where they beat the same pair and reached the semifinals.

Rankireddy and Ponnappa are now set to face another Indonesian duo, Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari. The pair has shown a noticeable improvement in form over the last month since beginning their training under new foreign coach Mathias Boe. In the men's doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also moved forward, winning a tight contest against Scotland's Christopher and Matthew Grimley 21-18, 19-21, 21-16.
