Roberto Bautista Agut delivered a superior performance in Mallorca to upset the defending champion, Daniil Medvedev. By remaining steady while Medvedev struggled with his temperament, Bautista Agut controlled the match. This straight-sets loss in the quarterfinals means the world number one will finish this grass season without a trophy. The Spaniard's convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory propelled him into the semifinals and marked his fourth triumph over a top-ranked player, adding to his three previous wins against Novak Djokovic.
After winning his first grass-court title at the Mallorca Open last year, Medvedev was unable to protect his crown. Bautista Agut managed to turn the tables on the Russian, avenging a defeat from the Halle Open. Only a week ago, Medvedev had dominated their encounter at the Terra Wortmann Open with a straight-sets win, but the outcome was entirely different this Thursday.
In Halle, Medvedev's serve was a lethal weapon that allowed him to glide through the match against Bautista Agut. However, the environment in Mallorca was far less forgiving; the wind hampered the Russian's serve, preventing him from finding any real rhythm. Throughout the contest, Medvedev appeared strangely detached, as if the loss didn't particularly bother him.
This isn't the first time the 34-year-old Spaniard has been a problem for Medvedev; in fact, Bautista Agut had won three of their previous encounters while dropping only a single set. Typically, Medvedev is the one who wears down opponents with his relentless flat shots and booming first serves. This time, however, the roles were reversed. Bautista Agut was the one dictating the pace and frustrating the Russian, leading Medvedev to commit uncharacteristic mistakes.
Facing the 20th-ranked Bautista Agut, Medvedev managed only one break point. While the Russian is renowned for his endurance in long rallies, he attempted to disrupt the flow with drop shots and tactical variations in this quarterfinal. These gambles didn't pay off, as the Spaniard remained unfazed and delivered a clinical performance to wrap up the match in just 71 minutes.
Bautista Agut is set to face Antoine Bellier in the semifinals. The Swiss qualifier, ranked 303rd, reached the stage after a tough battle against Tallon Griekspoor, winning 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Bellier becomes the lowest-ranked semifinalist since Juan Manuel Cerundolo, ranked 335th, reached the finals in Cordoba back in 2021.
