After a string of three consecutive losses, Cameron Norrie found his winning form again with a convincing opening-round victory over Kaichi Uchida at the Korea Open. Coming off a tough stretch, the British number one had suffered setbacks in the Davis Cup against Alexander Bublik and Botic van De Zandschulp, and narrowly missed out against Taylor Fritz at the recent Laver Cup. Seizing a favorable draw in Seoul, the second seed wasted no time in overwhelming Uchida, a Japanese wild card sitting at 163 in the rankings.
The world number 8 made quick work of Uchida with a 6-2, 6-2 scoreline, smoothly advancing to the tournament's quarterfinals. Norrie's dominance was evident as he broke his opponent's serve twice per set, closing out the match in 63 minutes. It was a masterclass in serving; the Brit delivered eight aces and remained completely unthreatened on his own serve, facing zero break points. This result sees the 27-year-old reach his 11th tour-level quarterfinal of the year.
Norrie set the tone immediately, employing a clinical approach that left Uchida struggling to keep up. By maintaining a high level of aggression, the Brit managed to sweep five games in a row to claim the first set.
The momentum carried over into the second set, where the 28-year-old Uchida struggled to find any answers to Norrie's game. The Brit quickly surged to a 3-1 lead, and although Uchida managed to hold serve once to slow the pace, it was only a temporary reprieve. Norrie quickly regained control, winning the next three games straight to seal the match.
Next up for Cameron Norrie is a quarterfinal clash on Friday against the eighth seed, American Jenson Brooksby. The world number 40, Brooksby, earned his spot after a 6-3, 6-4 win over South Korea's Kwon Soon-woo, a match that lasted an hour and a half. The 21-year-old American is now fighting for his first-ever title at the tour level here in Seoul.
Brooksby has had a promising season so far, reaching the finals in both Atlanta and Dallas. This will be his fourth quarterfinal appearance this year; while he won the first two, he suffered a recent exit in San Diego last week.
When it comes to their head-to-head history, Norrie holds a 1-0 advantage after defeating Brooksby in straight sets at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters. Given that Norrie has secured twice as many match wins as Brooksby this season, he enters this matchup as the clear favorite.
