The second round of the Australian Open saw American prodigy Coco Gauff defeat Emma Raducanu, the 2021 U.S. Open champion. The match, a clash between two rising stars that fans had been eager to see, ended in a straight-sets victory for the American. It was a tense battle, and Gauff actually came within a single point twice of being forced into a deciding set, but she managed to stay calm and seal the win with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) scoreline. For the 18-year-old from Florida, this is her first time reaching the third round in Melbourne since 2020.
American teenager Coco Gauff defeated the 2021 U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu in the second round of the Australian Open. In the eagerly anticipated women’s singles clash between two young tennis stars, the American triumphed over the British in straight sets. Gauff was twice a point away from being pushed to a decider by Raducanu but the American teenager steadied herself and went on to secure a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory in their first head-to-head meeting. The 18-year-old sensation from Florida reached the third round at Melbourne Park for the first time since 2020.

Gauff's path continues in the third round with a match against fellow countrywoman Bernarda Pera. Looking back, her best run at this tournament was a fourth-round appearance in 2020. Now ranked world no. 7, Gauff holds the distinction of being the youngest seed in the women's draw. After narrowly missing out on the title at the 2022 French Open, her primary goal remains winning her first Grand Slam trophy.

This win over Raducanu was more than just a progression in the tournament; it marked the 100th career victory for Gauff. This achievement makes her the youngest woman to reach 100 wins since Caroline Wozniacki accomplished the feat in 2009.

As for Raducanu, despite her current world ranking of 77th and a lingering ankle injury, she fought hard to push the match to the limit. The 20-year-old Brit had a real chance to take the second set, holding two set points while leading 5-4. However, a long backhand and a failed drop shot into the net allowed Gauff to hold her serve. A few more unforced errors from Raducanu eventually shifted the momentum of the tiebreaker and the match in favor of the American.

Speaking after the match, Gauff mentioned that her strategy was to stay present and focus on one point at a time rather than worrying about the overall outcome. She admitted she simply told herself to persevere. Gauff noted that she felt confident in her level of play and believed that even if the match had gone to a third set, she would have likely emerged victorious.

Earlier in the day, the tournament suffered a major upset when defending champion Rafael Nadal was eliminated. The 22-time Grand Slam winner fell in straight sets to American Mackenzie McDonald, losing 4-6, 4-6, 5-7 at the Rod Laver Arena. Nadal appeared to struggle throughout the match, hampered by both his form and an injury during the second round.
