India's bid to top Group C was cut short on Wednesday when they were outclassed 4-1 by Indonesia in their final group game. Although both teams had already guaranteed their places in the quarterfinals with two prior wins, Indonesia's victory ensures they enter the knockout phase as the group leaders.
Defending champions India’s aspirations of reaching the Thomas Cup knockout stage as group leaders were shattered by a clinical Indonesia, who won 4-1 in their final pool encounter here on Wednesday. Both India and Indonesia have already qualified for the coveted event’s quarterfinals after winning their first two matches. However, the latter will advance to the knockout round as Group C leaders.
The highlight for India amidst the defeat was seeing HS Prannoy return to winning form following a period of illness. Indonesia saw this match as a chance for redemption after their crushing 0-3 loss in the 2022 final, and they delivered a powerhouse performance to get their revenge. Prannoy gave India a hopeful start, overcoming Anthony Ginting with a score of 13-21, 21-12, 21-12 to put his team up 1-0.
The first doubles match turned into a thriller. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were pushed to the limit by Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana, the same duo that had previously defeated them at the All England Championship. After a tight battle ending 22-24, 24-22, 21-19, the match ended in favor of Indonesia, tying the overall score at 1-1 and demonstrating the enduring strength of Indonesia's doubles play.
Lakshya Sen struggled against the current All England singles champion, Jonatan Christie, falling 18-21, 21-16, 17-21. The 22-year-old Sen showed flashes of brilliance with some great net play to take the second game, but Christie's resolve proved too much in the end. India's struggles continued in the fourth match, where Dhruv Kapila and Sai Pratheek were beaten in straight sets, 22-20, 21-11, by Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Martin.
The final match, which didn't affect the overall result, saw Kidambi Srikanth lose to Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo; after winning the first set 21-19, Srikanth dropped the next two 22-24 and 14-21. Earlier in the day, Prannoy had provided the spark for India, recovering from a shaky first game to dominate Ginting in the following two. It was a commanding performance that marked one of Prannoy's most significant victories of the year.
Reflecting on his win, Prannoy noted that while he expected Ginting to be fast early on, he knew that staying competitive through the mid-section of the second game would open up a path to victory. In other news, the Indian women's team is scheduled to face Japan in the Uber Cup quarterfinals this Thursday, May 2.
