Linda Fruhvirtova, a rising Czech teen, captures her maiden WTA Tour title at the 2026 Chennai Open

Linda Fruhvirtova clinched her first WTA Tour singles trophy at the Chennai Open after a hard-fought comeback against the world no. 3 seed, Magda Linette. The 17-year-old showed immense resilience in the deciding set, winning the final five games to secure a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. Despite trailing 4-1 in the third, Fruhvirtova stepped up her game and fought back to complete a stunning breakthrough performance on Sunday.

The marathon match lasted two hours and 30 minutes, with the Czech youngster eventually overcoming Linette, who already had two singles titles to her name. This win also served as redemption for Fruhvirtova, who had lost her only previous encounter with Linette in Cleveland. At 17 years and 141 days old, she stands as the youngest winner on the WTA Tour this season, following in the footsteps of Coco Gauff, who won Parma last year at age 17.

The experienced 30-year-old Linette dominated the early stages of the match. She managed to break Fruhvirtova's serve to go up 5-4 in the first set, capitalizing on a forehand winner following a drop shot. Having finally gained the upper hand, Linette maintained her focus and held her serve comfortably to close out the first set.

However, Fruhvirtova refused to back down and began to shift the momentum in the second set. She secured her first break of the match to lead 5-3 and subsequently held her serve to level the contest. Riding a wave of confidence, she swept through the rest of the set without facing a single break point.

The final set began with Linette regaining control, using a strong forehand to break early and build a commanding 4-1 lead. It seemed the match was slipping away from the teenager, but Fruhvirtova utilized her powerful groundstrokes to break back at 4-3. She then surged ahead 5-4 with a brilliant return game. Maintaining her composure, the Czech teen converted her very first championship point to secure the title.

Following her emotional victory, Fruhvirtova admitted that this is a moment she will cherish for the rest of her life. She views this triumph as a fantastic stepping stone in her career and expressed her determination to keep improving and building on this success.

On the doubles side, the top-seeded duo of Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani dominated the final, sweeping Anna Blinkova and Natela Dzalamidze 6-1, 6-2 in under an hour to take the crown.
