Axelsen displayed a top form of play in Kuala Lumpur to clinch his first trophy of the year, beating the Japanese rising star in straight games 21-6, 21-15. It was Axelsen’s ninth consecutive final in BWF Super 1000 level tournaments, a new record. The Danish shuttler secured his eighth title in the top-tier level series.
At 29, Axelsen became the first European to ever defend the Malaysia Open title. His victory at the year's opening Super 1000 tournament earned him a prize of $87,500, whereas the runner-up, Naraoka, received $42,500.
The world's top-ranked player wasted no time asserting his dominance in the first game, immediately shifting into an attacking mode. He kept the young 21-year-old Naraoka under immense pressure using his signature pinpoint smashes. Unable to mount a defense against such accuracy, the Japanese player was quickly overwhelmed and lost the first set.

In the women's category, world number one Akane Yamaguchi brought a 55-year drought to an end for Japan by reclaiming the Malaysia Open singles title. In a hard-fought final, she defeated South Korea's An Se Young with a score of 12-21, 21-19, 21-11. The reigning world champion is only the second Japanese woman to achieve this feat, following in the footsteps of Hiroe Yuki, who won the title back in 1968.
