Both Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff had a phenomenal 2023, with Swiatek dominating at Roland Garros and Gauff winning the US Open. However, they won't be competing for the title at the Billie Jean King Cup finals in November. The scheduling is the primary issue, as the Seville tournament starts only two days after the WTA Finals in Mexico conclude. As a result, Gauff is missing from the American roster, and Swiatek has decided to skip the event for the second year running.
The U.S. team list released on Monday shows that their two highest-ranked athletes, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, are both out. The American side will instead be led by Madison Keys, Sofia Kenin, Danielle Collins, Sloane Stephens, and Taylor Townsend during the tournament in Seville from November 7 to 12.
The scheduling conflict is significant: the WTA Finals in Cancun, which bring together the world's top eight players like Swiatek, Gauff, and Pegula, finish on Sunday, November 5. This leaves a tiny window of just two days before the prestigious Billie Jean King Cup finals get underway in Seville on Tuesday, November 7.
This isn't the first time Swiatek has faced this dilemma; she also missed the Glasgow finals last year because the 2022 WTA Finals in Texas ended only a day prior. At the time, the Polish star expressed her frustration, noting that the governing bodies failed to coordinate the calendar. She warned that expecting players to travel across the globe and switch time zones in a single day is not only impractical but dangerous for their health and increases the risk of injury.
Other players are taking a different approach; Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina and the Czech duo of Marketa Vondrousova and Karolina Muchova plan to play in both tournaments. Interestingly, both the Czech Republic and Saudi Arabia were contenders to host the WTA Finals, an event reserved for the top eight singles and doubles pairs of the year. Meanwhile, the lineup for Seville includes players like Caroline Garcia, Madison Keys, and Switzerland's Belinda Bencic, who is representing the current defending champions.
On a separate note, Gauff announced on Sunday that she is withdrawing from the Zhengzhou Open in China. This follows a shoulder injury she picked up during her quarterfinal loss to Iga Swiatek at the China Open last week.
