Australia's innings began poorly after Jasprit Bumrah sent Mitchell Marsh back to the pavilion for a duck. The team managed to recover somewhat through David Warner and Steve Smith, who put on 69 runs for the second wicket. However, India regained control when Kuldeep Yadav broke the partnership by dismissing Warner for 41, followed by Ravindra Jadeja, who cleaned up Smith for 46 with a stunning piece of bowling.
Jadeja kept the pressure on in his next over, taking the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne (27) and Alex Carey (0) to put Australia on the defensive.
