Mumbai Indians (MI) eked out a 9-run win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) with a brilliant bowling effort at Mullanpur Stadium on Thursday. MI moved to the seventh spot on the points table after pulling off a crucial win against PBKS. On the other side, it was yet another narrow defeat for Punjab Kings, their fourth loss. Chasing 193, Ashutosh Sharma’s pyrotechnics did not prove to be enough as MI pacers held their nerves to bowl out PBKS for 183. Ashutosh top-scored with a scintillating knock of 28-ball 61. Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee starred with a three-wicket haul for MI.

The game started promisingly for the hosts, with Kagiso Rabada striking early to dismiss Ishan Kishan for 8. However, Mumbai steadied the ship as Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav built a crucial 81-run partnership. The breakthrough finally came in the 12th over via Punjab captain Sam Curran, who dismissed Rohit for 36. Despite this, Suryakumar kept the pressure on with an aggressive approach, successfully reaching his fifty.

Shortly after his half-century, Suryakumar was dismissed by Curran for 78 just as he was hitting his stride. Tilak Varma added a useful, undefeated 34, but the other batsmen failed to capitalize on the situation. Harshal Patel played a key role in limiting the score, grabbing three wickets in quick succession to hold MI to 192/7 by the end of the 20 overs.

Punjab Kings' chase got off to a disastrous start as Bumrah and Coetzee tore through the top order. Coetzee claimed a golden duck from Prabhsimran Singh in the very first over, and Bumrah quickly followed up by removing Rilee Rossouw and Sam Curran. PBKS found themselves in deep trouble at 14/4 after Coetzee also dismissed the dangerous Liam Livingstone for a low score. Shashank Singh attempted a comeback with a solid 41, but he eventually fell to Bumrah. A 57-run partnership between Ashutosh and Harpreet Brar (21) brought PBKS back into the game, but a collapse in the final overs handed the victory to MI.
