Lakshya Sen steps up to lead the Indian contingent at the 2026 German Open following Kidambi Srikanth's withdrawal

The German Open, a Super 300 BWF World Tour event with a $210,000 prize pool, takes place at Mulheim's Westenergie Sporthalle from March 7 to 12, 2023. It acts as a crucial precursor to the All England Open, featuring world-class athletes such as Lee Zii Jia, Saina Nehwal, Lakshya Sen, Kodai Naraoka, and Kunlavudt Vitidsarn.
The German Open badminton tournament is scheduled to take place from 7 to 12 March 2023 at the Westenergie Sporthalle in Mulheim, Germany. The 2023 German Open will be the fifth tournament of the 2023 BWF World Tour. The Super 300 event has a total prize pool of $210,000. Before the prestigious All England Open, the renowned German Open will see numerous pioneers like Lee Zii Jia, Kunlavudt Vitidsarn, Kodai Naraoka, Lakshya Sen, and Saina Nehwal representing their nation on a big stage.

India's hopes have shifted as former world number one Kidambi Srikanth has withdrawn from the tournament. Given that he was a finalist last time around, his departure is a blow to the team; however, it places Lakshya Sen in the spotlight as the new spearhead for India. Having won silver in the last edition, Sen is widely expected to perform well.

India's strongest representatives will be Lakshya Sen and the new national champion, Mithun Manjunath. Sen, who holds a Commonwealth Games gold, famously beat the world's top player, Viktor Axelsen, in the semifinals last year, though he narrowly missed the title. He begins his campaign against France's Christo Popov, and if he advances past the first round, he is likely to meet the top-seeded Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the quarterfinals.

For his European tour—which spans the German Open, the All England Championships, and the Swiss Open—world No. 12 Lakshya Sen will be supported by expert physiotherapist Heath Matthews. After helping India secure bronze at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship, Sen faces a grueling schedule with three consecutive tournaments from March 7th through March 26th.

Speaking to reporters, Sen expressed his excitement for a potential quarterfinal clash with Lee Zii Jia, noting that he has trained rigorously to ensure he enters the All England Open with strong momentum.

At the same time, 24-year-old Mithun Manjunath enters the fray riding high from his first national title, facing former world champion Loh Kean Yew in the opening round. India is also represented in the women's singles by Saina Nehwal and Malvika Bansod, while the 2022 CWG duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and B Sumeeth Reddy will compete in mixed doubles.
