Taylor Fritz had a golden opportunity to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal during this year's Wimbledon. Following a tough five-set win against Alexander Zverev, the American 13th seed was favored to beat the 25th seed, Lorenzo Musetti. Unfortunately, Fritz couldn't pull off back-to-back five-set wins, eventually losing to Musetti 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 after three and a half hours of play.
Taylor Fritz had a wonderful opportunity to make his first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon. After defeating No.4 Alexander Zverev in five sets on Monday, the American No.13 seed was the higher seed against No.25 Lorenzo Musetti and the favorite to advance to the Final Four. Fritz, however, was unable to win his second straight five-setter against Musetti, losing 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in 3 1/2 hours.
Lorenzo Musetti has advanced to the quarterfinals, where he will face the 24-time Grand Slam winner and world No. 2, Novak Djokovic, this Friday. It's a tough matchup, as Djokovic has won five of their six previous encounters. Musetti is now the only Italian left in the competition after Daniil Medvedev eliminated the top seed, Jannik Sinner. Meanwhile, the American drought continues; there hasn't been a US winner at a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick's 2003 U.S. Open victory, spanning 82 events.
Fritz was aiming to become just the fourth American man in 15 years to make it to the Wimbledon semifinals, following in the footsteps of Andy Roddick (2009), Sam Querrey (2017), and John Isner (2018). The drought for a title is even longer, as Pete Sampras remains the last American to win the tournament, which happened way back in 2000.
The match began with Musetti appearing hesitant, which let Fritz seize an early 3-1 lead in the first set, eventually closing it out with a clinical ace. Fritz kept the pressure on in the second, breaking early after Musetti hit a long forehand to lead 1-0. However, the tide turned during the second-set tiebreak, where Musetti secured the set with a second-serve winner that Fritz unfortunately hit straight into the net.
After Musetti dominated the third set, Fritz seemed poised to take the fourth, but Musetti missed a crucial forehand on set point, pushing the match into a deciding fifth frame. In the final set, Musetti took complete control, racing to a 4-0 lead thanks to a sharp backhand slice winner. As Musetti served at 5-1 (30-15), Fritz's physical condition gave out; his leg buckled, and he collapsed onto the court. Musetti then served out the match to reach his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal.
\"I feel like I played a fantastic game, especially since Taylor was in such great form,\" Musetti remarked after his victory. \"I'm absolutely thrilled to reach my first semifinal here. I'm almost speechless, though I gave it my absolute all. I don't think it has fully sunk in yet,\" the 22-year-old Italian admitted.
Regarding his next opponent, Musetti noted, \"Djokovic is an absolute legend. Our matches are always intense battles, so I'm expecting a huge fight. It will likely be one of the toughest challenges of my career, but I'm an ambitious person who loves a challenge. We'll see what happens.\"
